GRANDEZA MEXICANA FOLK BALLET COMPANY

Jose Vences, Founder and Artistic Director

Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company celebrates the depth and diversity of Mexican culture by presenting dynamic performances to audiences throughout Southern California and beyond.  Formed in 2003 by Jose Vences, Grandeza Mexicana includes both a renowned ballet folklorico company and a rigorous dance academy.

History

Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company was founded in September 2003 by Jose Vences and a dedicated group of 12 dancers.  Jose Vences, cofounder and past artistic director of Ballet Folklorico del Pacifico, accomplished dancer and choreographer, established Grandeza Mexicana to provide dancers in Los Angeles with a space to collaboratively develop stimulating choreographies that represent the complexity and beauty of his beloved Mexico.

Mr. Vences’ instructional style is the result of his many years as a professional ballet folklorico dancer, including time as a member of the world-famous Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez.  Using a variety of teaching strategies and points of inspiration, Mr. Vences’ goal is to present the community with high-quality performances that draw from the rich legends and traditions of Mexican culture, history, and mythology.

Less than three years after its inception, Grandeza Mexicana has grown to more than 30 dancers and a full repertoire including works representing the themes and regions of:  Azteca, Chiapas, Guerrero, Jalisco, La Loteria, Mayas, Michoacan, Nayarit, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca, Sinaloa, and Veracruz.  On average, dancers rehearse 12 hours per week, including related supplementary instruction in ballet, African-dance, and jazz.  The company has been twice nominated for the Lestor Horton Award and has numerous television credits. The Grandeza Mexicana has quickly built praise for its dynamic ensemble works, dramatic costumes, artistic exploration, and its capacity to successfully present large-scale shows and events. The company regularly performs for audiences throughout California and recently completed a tour through the central coast.

Despite its rapid growth, Grandeza Mexicana remains true to its original mission and collaborative spirit.  Major works currently in development are driven by Vences’ commitment to quality and supported by the talent and spirit of collaborating choreographers, guest instructors, and the technical expertise of active managing and advisory board members
