
In addition to its choreographies, community events and performances, Grandeza Mexicana has gained recognition for it costumes and props. This work recently garnered a 2005 nomination for the prestigious Lester Horton Award for Best Costume, selected among all dance companies in Southern California.
Costumes
Grandeza Mexicana’s costumes are developed through a collaborative process led by artistic director Jose Vences and costume director Elias Roldan. Together, Mr. Vences and Mr. Roldan select materials, colors, and styles using a number of sources to develop traditional and stylized costumes. Lupita Onofre has also been a valuable member of the costume design and construction team.
Props
In a similar process, props are designed by Jose Vences, Victor Solis, Benny Vasquez, and Porfirio Vidal. Props are made using various materials and products.

Wardrobe
Costumes and accessories are constructed, maintained, repaired, and organized team of volunteers, known as “Las Mamas.” This tireless group works three or more days per week to prepare costumes for performances, repair existing costumes and create new pieces for upcoming works.
Grandeza Mexicana’s wardrobe team is led by longtime volunteer Teresa Cantu and includes the following: Benny Vasquez, Graciela Santana, Teresa Romero, Quintin Santana, Edgar Valencia, Rocio Arumbula, Eustolia Ventura, Teresa Cantu, Catalina Garcia, Gabriela Mendoza, Ines Ramirez, Elias Roldan, and Lupita Onofre.
These individuals are truly the backbone of the company, donating hundreds of hours to produce Grandeza Mexicana’s costumes. Each of them is greatly appreciated for their talent and generosity.
